The human body has hundreds of muscles. The three types are skeletal(骨骼的) muscles, smooth muscles and cardiac, or heart muscles. Each kind of muscle has a special job to do.
The skeletal muscles are attached to the bones; they actually hold the skeleton together. Strong cords, called tendons(肌腱), help connect these muscles to the bones. Skeletal muscles give us strength and allow us to move in many ways. If you look at skeletal muscles through a microscope, you will see that it has bands of fibers that look like stripes(条纹). These stripes are called striations. Skeletal muscles usually move because the brain has sent a conscious message to them telling them what to do. This is called voluntary movement.
Another type of muscle is smooth muscle. Unlike skeletal muscle, smooth muscle does not have striations. This is found in organs such as the stomach, the bladder(膀胱), the lungs and the eyes. Smooth muscles are smaller than the skeletal muscles and they move involuntarily. The brain tells these muscles what to do, but we aren’t even aware of it. For example, we don’t have to think about breathing or digesting food. The smooth muscles just do their jobs automatically. For this reason smooth muscles are sometimes called involuntary muscles.
Like smooth muscle, cardiac muscle also works involuntarily. It is a very thick muscle that is found only in the walls of the heart. Its job is to pump blood out of the heart and into blood vessels called arteries(动脉). The arteries help carry the blood to all parts of the body. When the cardiac muscles relax, they let blood back into the heart. Cardiac muscles have striations, just like skeletal muscles do.

Motorists over the age of 75 face compulsory tests of their eyesight and ability to drive under proposals being considered by ministers.
The biggest overhaul of motoring law in a generation could also lead to all drivers having to give assurances(保证) of their fitness to get behind the wheel every 10 years.
Other changes under consideration include issuing(发放) daylight driving licences for motorists with night blindness, together with stricter checks on all drivers whose medical condition brought a threat to other road users.
It is understood that the proposals will be part of a review of the law governing the medical fitness of drivers that will be announced publicly by the summer.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is dealing with a rising number of motorists who are concerned that they have conditions – from failing eyesight to epilepsy – that could affect their driving.
In 2006, the DVLA dealt with 600,000 motorists whose physical ability to drive needed to be recertified(重新认证), a 20 per cent rise on the previous year. With an ageing population, the biggest challenge is dealing with the rising number of elderly motorists. By 2021, there will be an estimated three million drivers over the age of 70 on Britain's roads.
Drivers must renew their licences at the age of 70 and every three years thereafter. The applicant is legally required to tell the DVLA of any conditions that could weaken their ability behind the wheel.
Ministers have ruled out a compulsory maximum age for driving but will instead rely on tightening up the checks on motorists over the age of 75. The most likely option would be tests to ensure motorists were fit to drive. They would include an eyesight test and a cognitive(认知) test that would prove a driver's ability to react to road signs, driving conditions, pedestrians and vehicles.
However, checks are likely to be tightened at all ages. The strictest controls are expected to be imposed(强制) on motorists of any age who have had a heart attack or stroke. They could have to produce a doctor's approval to resume(重新得到) driving. Anyone making a false declaration would be guilty of a criminal offence.
63. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The new motoring law will come into effect by the summer.
   B. Drivers over the age of 75 must renew their licences every three years.
   C. Doctors will decide whether one can get their driving licences.
   D. Drivers at all ages will be expected to provide their medical condition.
64. What is the biggest challenge to the traffic safety in Britain according to the writer?
   A. Ageing population.                                  B. Increasing number of cars.
C. Increasing number of elderly motorists.           D. Driving conditions.
65. The underlined word “overhaul” in Paragraph 2 means _______.
   A. change                   B. consideration        C. concern                D. challenge
66. What can be learned from the passage?
  A. There will be more and more aged drivers in Britain.
   B. Anyone can get a driving licence as long as he/she is in good health.
   C. Health tends to decline as one gets old.
   D. It will be guilty to make a false declaration.
D
She examined him closely, and decided she liked him much better now, dressed up in a beautiful coat, with a fine feather on top of his hat. And, she named him Feathertop.
She looked at Feathertop and laughed with happiness. He is a beauty, she thought. "Now what?" she thought, feeling troubled again. She felt that Feathertop looked too good to be a scarecrow. "He can do something better," she thought, "than just stand near the corn all summer and scare the crows." And she decided on another plan for Feathertop.
She took the pipe of tobacco she was smoking and put it into the mouth of Feathertop. "Puff, darling, puff," she said to Feathertop. "Puff away, my fine fellow. It is your life." Smoke started to rise from Feathertop's mouth. At first, it was just a little smoke, but Feathertop worked hard, blowing and puffing. And, more and more smoke came out of him.
"Puff away, my pet," Mother Rigby said, with happiness. "Puff away, my pretty one. Puff for your life, I tell you." Mother Rigby then ordered Feathertop to walk. "Go forward," she said. "You have a world before you."
Feathertop put one hand out in front of him, trying to find something for support. At the same time he pushed one foot forward with great difficulty. But Mother Rigby shouted and ordered him on, and soon he began to go forward. Then she said, "You look like a man, and you walk like a man. Now I order you to talk like a man."
Feathertop gasped(喘气), struggled, and at last said in a small whisper, "Mother, I want to speak, but I have no brain. What can I say?"
"Ah, you can speak," Mother Rigby answered. "What shall you say? Have no fear. When you go out into the world, you will say a thousand things, and say them a thousand times...and saying them a thousand times again and again, you still will be saying nothing. So just talk, babble like a bird. Certainly you have enough of a brain for that."
Mother Rigby gave Feathertop much money and said "Now you are as good as any of them and can hold your head high with importance."
But she told Feathertop that he must never lose his pipe and must never let it stop smoking. She warned him that if his pipe ever stopped smoking, he would fall down and become just a pile of sticks again.
"Have no fear, Mother," Feathertop said in a big voice and blew a big cloud of smoke out of his mouth.
"On your way," Mother Rigby said, pushing Feathertop out the door. "The world is yours. And if anybody asks you for your name, just say Feathertop. For you have a feather in your hat and a handful of feathers in your empty head."
Feathertop found the streets in town, and many people started to look at him. They looked at his beautiful purple coat and his white silk stockings, and at the pipe he carried in his left hand, which he put back into his mouth every five steps he walked. They thought he was a visitor of great importance.
As Feathertop walked along one of the quieter streets near the edge of town, he saw a very pretty girl standing in front of a small red brick house. A little boy was standing next to her. The pretty girl smiled at Feathertop, and love entered her heart. It made her whole face bright with sunlight.
67. How do you understand Rigby’s “another plan” in the second paragraph?
   A. To make Feathertop cleverer.                     B. To make Feathertop somebody.
   C. To make Feathertop fall in love.                  D. To make him talk freely.
68. Who do you think Feathertop is after reading the passage?
   A. A created figure.                            B. A noble person.
C. Mother Rigby’s pet.                          D. A boy of empty head.
69. What does the underlined part “…you are as good as any of them” mean?
A. you are as perfect as others             B. you have as much money as others
C. you behave nearly the same as others     D. you look as if you are the most important
70. In the last but one paragraph people in the streets tended to think ________.
A. a man of importance must be a heavy smoker
B. a man of importance must communicate with others properly
C. a man of importance must be wonderfully dressed
D. a man of importance must behave differently from others

第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)

注意:每个空格只填1个单词。请将答案写在答题卡上相应题号的横线上。
In addition to self-awareness, imagination, and conscience, it is the fourth quality — independent will — that really makes effective self-management possible. It is the ability to make decisions and choices and to act in agreement with them. It is the ability to act rather than to be acted upon, to actively carry out the program we have developed through the other three qualities.
The human will is an amazing thing. Time after time, it has overcome unbelievable difficulties. The Helen Kellers of this world give dramatic(给人深刻印象的) evidence to the value, the power of the independent will.
But as we examine this quality in the context of effective self-management, we realize it’s usually not the dramatic, the visible(可见的), the once-in-a-lifetime, up-by-the-bootstraps(自立自强的) effort that brings lasting success. This special ability comes from learning how to use this great quality in the decisions we make every day.
The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by our personal honesty. Honesty is, fundamentally, the value we place on ourselves. It’s our ability to make and keep promises to ourselves, to “walk our talk.”
Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things” are, it is management that puts them first, day-by-day, moment-by-moment. Management is discipline (training to be self-controlled), carrying it out.
Discipline obtains from belief—belief in a set of values, belief in an overriding(最主要的) purpose, to a long-term or short term goal that must be carried out.
In other words, if you are an effective manager of yourself, your discipline comes from within; it is a function of your independent will. You are a follower of your own deep values and their source. And you have the will, the quality to control your feelings and moods rather than depend on others or have your work half done.

第五部分 (书面表达)(One possible version)
The global financial crisis of 2008 has contributed to a more fierce competition in job markets. Increasing numbers of college graduates are finding themselves in a situation where too many jobseekers are fighting for survival. Our class has had a heated discussion on this problem. Students have different ideas.
70% of them think it makes sense that they realize an early employment by lowering their income expectations, thus reducing the burden on their families. They also believe there’re better opportunities for development if they go to work in the west or rural areas. 20% of them consider full employment an unrealistic goal, so they choose to continue their further study or go to vocational schools to learn some practical skills to make better preparations for future careers. Finally, the rest 10% determine to set up their own businesses.
As for me, I think after a series of timely measures taken by the government, we are confident about and capable of overcoming the current difficulties and challenges and the employment prospects for graduates will be better soon. So all we need to do now is plan and act in ways that reflect the reality, to assure that we make full use of our talent and skills.

听力原文
1. W: Did you buy any of the sweaters that were on sale?
M: Buy any? I got five of them. They were such a good bargain.
2. M: This is hopeless. These figures still don’t add up right. Let’s do the calculations over again.
W: Yes. But why not do them tomorrow? It’s very late now and I am hungry.
3. W: Eggs are supposed to be one of the most healthful foods.
M: Next to potatoes.
4. M: I can’t find my new tie. I need it for today’s party.
W: Let’s look for it later. Right now, I need your help fixing this shelf before I paint it.
5. M: Welcome back! I didn’t see you in maths class on Friday.
W: I wasn’t here on Friday. My geology class went on a field trip to see some different rocks in Dead Valley. In fact we camped there last night.
M: Oh, I see. And we will also make for Florida next week.
6. W: Well, you finally got here. It's about time. I've been waiting in this restaurant a full thirty minutes.
M: Sorry, Jeannie. You know me. I'm always late.
W: Everybody knows, and everybody's getting tired of it. Five, ten, thirty minutes all the time. No one is that busy. Even in school you always interrupt the teacher right in the middle of a sentence. The whole class has to wait while you sit down and put down your books. It annoys him and everyone else.
M: All I can say is sorry. Maybe I'll reform, but don't count on it.
7. W: How soon do I have to leave my room?
M: Normally it’s by 12 at noon on the day you leave.
W: Well, you see, my plane doesn’t go till half past five tomorrow afternoon.
M: I see. Which room is it, madam?
W: Room 77, my name is Browning.
M: Ah, yes, Mrs. Browning. You may keep your room then till 2 p.m., if you wish.
W: Oh, that’s nice. By the way, how long will it take to get to the airport from here?
M: It’s usually a 90-minute ride. But you’d better set off at 2:30 in case there is a traffic jam on the way.
8. W: Good morning. What can I do for you?
M: Good morning. I was wondering if you could help me. I received this notice yesterday afternoon.
W: Let me see. Yes, it's $10 for a lost book.
M: But I didn't lose that book. I'm quite sure I have returned it.
W: Let me check. Just a minute, please. Our records show that you checked it out on September 17 and we have no record of its having been returned.
M: I'm sure I've returned it. I remember that it was a rainy day and I had to carry it in a plastic bag.
W: Well, our policy is that, when a book is lost, the loser must pay for it. We have to be fair about these things.
M: I understand your position. Is there a way we can check to see if the book is here, just in case someone missed it?
W: Well, I doubt that we would make any mistakes about this. But you can look on the shelf. (pause for two seconds)
M: Aha! Here it is!
W: Let me see if it is the same copy you borrowed. I'll check the number on it with our records.
M: I'm very sorry to bother you with this.
W: It doesn't matter. Well, it is the same copy.
M: Good!
W: Sorry. We could have missed something. I am awfully sorry.
M: Don't worry about that.
9. W: We're thinking about putting on a show this spring.
M: Do you think you'll be able to make some money?
W: Oh, no, we just want to do it for the fun of it. You know there are a lot of us who like to get on a stage and perform.
M: What kind of show?
W: A musical play.
M: Have you decided who to do it?
W: We have three in mind, and of course we've been thinking about you.
M: Me? Why me?
W: You sing, don't you? Everyone says you have a wonderful voice.
M: Well, I have sung a little, but I've never really appeared on a stage.
W: I thought you sang in church every Sunday.
M: That's different. There are so many other singers too.
W: Then here's your chance to find out how good you are. And not just to sing but to act and dance too.
M: Oh, it might be exciting.
10.
Good evening, everyone! Here we are at the beginning of a television season. Let’s look at the best of the new and the old shows. First, let’s talk about the daily shows. I think the best show is on Channel six from 6:00 to 7:00 every evening. Johnson has read the news on this show for many years. He and his team always do their difficult job well. The same channel is good for late night watch. At 11:30 every night, Ted talks with famous people on this 90-minute show, “Nighttime”. He always has interesting people on. This week, three movie stars are going to talk about their new films. In the afternoons, only Channel Eleven has a good children’s show, “The Children’s Room” at 3:30. This show has educational cartoons. They keep children happy and entertained for hours. Channel Three has the best game shows, and then watch this one. They ask interesting questions and give away a lot of money. It’s a good way to learn about the world.
